Tybee Island Wine Festival
Thursday – Saturday, May 4 – 6th, Event times vary
Every year people flock to Tybee Island for the Tybee Island Wine Fest. This three-day event features local wines and liquors for anyone from the sensitive palate to the hardened whiskey enthusiast. If you can’t make it every day, be sure to look out for the private dinners and tastings. They’ve partnered with local restaurants to provide the eats while you test your aspiring sommelier skills.
Chazito’s Cuisine Pig Roast and Domino Tournament
Saturday, May 6th, 11 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Have you ever munched on the crispy skin of a freshly roasted pig? Regardless of your answer, you’ve got to get your taste from Chazito’s. They’ll be pulling out two pigs, one at 11 a.m. and the other at 4:3o p.m. I can’t even begin to think about that smokey deliciousness without salivating. Okay, I’ll see y’all there! Cinco de Mayo at Tequlia’s Town
Friday, May 5th, 5 – 11 p.m.
Oh yeah! Cinco de Mayo falls on a Friday this year, so you can be sure that it will be felt downtown. Tequila’s Town has a Sandfly and downtown location. Let me tell you that both will be crazy on Friday. So in the spirit of fairness, I must mention Jalapeno’s and Cilantro’s who also have multiple locations. There will be long wait times, but also free shots of tequila…
Cinco de Mayo with Blowin’ Smoke
Friday, May 5th, 6 – 9 p.m.
So if you’re feeling a more relaxed vibe for el Cinco, then Blowin’ Smoke’s celebration may be more your speed. I hear there will be cornhole games, a piñata, and hispanic fare. Chef Neil Youngblood is the taco Picasso, so the food will be bomb. It’s Cinco in the South!
Derby Day at 22 Square Restaurant
Saturday, May 6th, 5 – 7 p.m.
Is your money on Classic Empire or McCracken? I think I’m feeling Always Dreaming for the win. Yes, those are all horses’ names who will be running this year in the Kentucky Derby. This southern tradition does not go without notice here in Sav. There are quite a few restaurants hosting themed events, but where better to be dressed to the nines than at the Andaz? Even if you don’t care for horse racing, it’s an excuse to don your ridiculously loud hat and sundress. For more information, click here.
17th Annual Doggie Carnival
Sunday, May 7th, 12 – 4 p.m.
Pets can be foodies too! The Humane Society for Greater Savannah hosts a doggie carnival every year, so the pups get to have their own festival in Forsyth Park. Bark-worthy bites will be doggie ice cream, custom decorated treats, and The Big Cheese food truck and others for those on two legs. This is a charitable event to benefit the humane society, so come out and support! For more information, click here.
Beginner Kombucha Class
Thursday, May 11th, 6 – 7:15 p.m.
You may be thinking “what’s kombucha?” It’s not a yoga pose if you were wondering. It’s actually a probiotic-filled drink that aids in digestive health. You can find it at Kroger in a 8 oz bottle for about $7 a pop. Luckily, you can avoid the store and make your own! Eat Thrive Move is hosting classes, so when your friends ask where you got it you can say “Oh this? I just made it myself”. For more information, click here.
Mother’s Day Brunch
Sunday, May 14th, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
If mom’s a foodie, go ahead and book your seats for the Mother’s Day brunch buffet at Cohen’s Retreat. They are organic and local plus the space is beautiful. (We’ve featured them here if you want to see for yourself). Serving classic American breakfast to Cohen signatures, you won’t regret bringing mom here for brunch and mimosas! For more information, click here.
The Beach House Cookbook by Mary Kay Andrews book signing
Saturday, May 20th, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Last but not least is Mary Kay Andrew’s book signing for her latest cookbook, The Beach House Cookbook. She’s a Savannah native writing about her coastal Southern dishes. After strolling around Seaside Sisters on Tybee, stop and buy an ice cream cookie sandwich from her book. Proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels. For more information, click here.
